Programme Overview
NWO (Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek) is the Dutch national research council, operating under the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to fund curiosity-driven and applied scientific research across the Netherlands. Established by the NWO Act, it is the primary public funder of academic research in the Netherlands outside the university block grants.

Who Can Apply?
The lead applicant must be employed at a Dutch knowledge institution recognised by NWO (universities, university medical centres, NWO institutes such as NIKHEF, ASTRON, or AMOLF) at the time of award. For Open Competition ENW/M and Veni/Vidi/Vici, the principal investigator applies on their own behalf.
Perspectief and NWA Routes require a consortium of at least 5–8 partners — the lead is always a Dutch university or research institute, with industry, SMEs, and public-sector bodies committing matching co-funding. International partners may participate but cannot lead.

What Does It Fund?
NWO grants fund curiosity-driven research, applied thematic programmes, public-private partnerships, and talent grants that cover salary costs (researcher + small bench fee) plus project costs such as equipment, materials, travel, and dissemination. Funds are typically structured as multi-year budgets with annual reporting milestones.
For consortium programmes (Perspectief, NWA Routes), the grant funds the academic work package while industry and public-sector partners commit matching in-kind and cash co-funding — typically 30–50% of total programme cost.
Deadlines & Timeline
Application windows: Veni/Vidi/Vici run on fixed annual cycles — Veni typically opens in January with decisions in late summer; Vidi and Vici open in autumn. Open Competition ENW/M runs 1–2 rounds per year per panel. Perspectief themes are launched every 2–3 years. NWA Routes open periodic thematic calls when route funding rounds are announced.
Processing time: Typically 6–9 months from full proposal deadline to funding decision. Veni decisions can land within ~6 months of the deadline.
