Programme Overview
The Berlin Startup Stipendium (BSS) is a Berlin Senate-funded grant for technology and knowledge-intensive startup teams in the pre-incorporation phase. It provides founders with a living stipend and coaching to develop their business concept, filling the gap before EXIST or IBB ProFIT become accessible.
Who Can Apply?
Founding teams (1–2 people) with a technology or knowledge-intensive business concept, residing or willing to move to Berlin. University affiliation NOT required (unlike EXIST). Typically pre-incorporation.
What Does It Fund?
Technology or knowledge-based business concepts with significant innovation potential. Digital, hardware, deeptech, creative tech, and social innovation are all eligible.
Funding Amount & Rates
€2,000/month per founder (1–2 founders) for up to 12 months. Plus €4,000 per team for coaching/material costs.
Deadlines & Timeline
Application deadline: Multiple cohorts per year. Applications via the Berlin Senate or designated programme manager. Check berlinstartsup.de for current intake dates.
Processing time: 6–10 weeks from application to decision (faster than EXIST or IBB).
